Product Review: SheaMoisture Smooth & Repair High Shine Glosser

Anyone who's been using the curly girl method knows we have two sworn enemies: Sulfates & Silicones. In order to make the most of our natural curls, we must avoid BOTH. Of the two, I think Silicones are far more dangerous because they can be found in almost every product that is NOT made for curly hair AND MANY that claim to be, and they WILL NOT wash out with sulfate-free products. Not every curly girl completely eliminates sulfates (low-sulfate shampoos can work better for some hair textures), but if you're not using them, Silicones are the enemy.

Over the past decade, manufacturers of hair products have started making significant strides in accommodating the CG community. We have more sulfate-free and silicone-free options than ever, and as the "Natural is Beautiful" movement picks up speed I think this trend will continue.

Where I've noticed a void in my own hair routine is in what I call the "shine factor." I have highlights, which naturally makes my hair a little dull (darker hair colors actually reflect shine much better than lighter ones), and though my hair is extremely healthy right now, it is not shiny. I have not done much experimenting with oils in my hair and don't plan to until the time comes where it's appearing dry, which right now it isn't.

So, what can we do? There are dozens upon dozens of Shine Serums, Sprays and Sealers out there that worked wonders for me back when I was flat ironing. They worked because they are all loaded with silicones. For well over a decade I had a stockpile of Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum on hand at all times, but those days are over now. I'd all but given up on having any real shine in my life until I picked this up last week:

SheaMoisture Tahitian Noni and Monoi Smooth & Repair High Shine Glosser

I LOVE this product. I generally like the SheaMoisture line, but they miss the mark on stylers sometimes, at least for my hair type. If your hair is lacking shine, THIS is the product that will fix the problem. Not only that, it will give you extra definition and make your curls soft and frizz-free. Important application tips:

1) DO NOT spray this product directly on hair. I made this mistake the first time I used it. IT IS NOT A MIST.

2) DO spray this product into your hand, rub hands together, and apply.

3) DO NOT apply this product to wet hair. It really works best when hair is dry and the results are IMMEDIATE.

It is always fun to discover a product that's both inexpensive and does exactly what it claims. I highly recommend picking up this glosser next time you hit the store!

Hey Jen just got this stuff today. So far so good. My hair looks sort of greasy/shiny but that's OK.

I think I either really love it or on the fence. Yesterday when I bought it I applied it like you recommended. After a while my hair was looking great, nice and shiny and healthy and tamed down A LOT of frizz! After a good while I noticed some frizz so I applied more. I probably shouldn't have applied more, the frizz probably wasn't too bad and most likely I'm the only one that notices it. After the 2nd application it didn't make my hair shiny but more 'greasy' looking. I put greasy in parentheses cause I'm not sure if that's the right way to describe it.

I asked our son who has 3 type hair, how does my hair look. He described it as it looks thin. I said what do you mean thin? He elaborated 'hair closer to my face, not as curly but still very wavy'. Hmm.

Now that I woke up the product is definitely still in my hair and my hair looks great. Still that 'greasy-ish' look but not much frizz at all. My hair is less curly but still very wavy.

Not sure if I put too much product cause I did 2 applications yesterday because 'I thought I had too much frizz'.

I have red highlights. After the 1st application the product really brought my highlights out. After the 2nd application too somewhat.

There's a learning curve...I put too much in my first day and it did look greasy, but oddly enough the next day it looked fantastic. I think for me the magic number is 3 pumps. I do a gloss over my hair with my hands, then put some that's left on my fingers and go over individual curls that still look a bit frizzy. I like that it gives me definition without any crunch, and there are some really good conditioning oils in it as well, so it works in both directions. Thanks so much for your feedback!!
